5 Amazing Day Trips From Seville

Seville is an amazing destination in its own right, with beautiful architecture, fascinating history and so many stories to take in. But if you have a bit of extra time in the area, I highly recommend getting out and seeing a bit more of Andalucía, Spain’s southern province. While living there for three months earlier this year I was lucky enough to be able to get out of the city at the weekends and visit some of the nearby places. These five day trips from Seville are the ones I would recommend most. Some are easy to get to by public transport, some require having your own vehicle or renting one. From beautiful cities to jaw-dropping walks, you have to check them out!

1. Carmona

Only half an hour’s drive from Seville, Carmona is a beautiful town perched on a hill rising from the surrounding plains. It could be mistaken for one of Andalucía’s Pueblos Blancos with its white-washed houses and red rooftops, but Carmona is a destination in itself. It has churches galore, a Roman necropolis and a ruined Alcázar right in the centre that is so much fun to explore. Carmona makes a perfect half day trip, or you could stretch it out into a full day by relaxing in one of its many tapas bars.

2. Córdoba

Possibly my favourite city in southern Spain (sorry, Seville!), Córdoba really stole my heart. I wish I had spent more than one day there, but what a day it was. With the train only taking an hour at most to get there, Córdoba is a really easy day tip from Seville. The Jewish Quarter is a warren of tiny, cobbled streets, eventually leading you to that famous place in the heart of the city: the Mezquita. Technically a Christian cathedral, it maintains so much of its former Muslim architecture and feel that it is still called a mezquita – a ‘mosque’ – by everyone, locals and visitors. The beautiful red and white candy-striped arches are worth the visit to Córdoba alone, even if you saw nothing else.

3. El Rocío

One of the gateways to Doñana National Park, El Rocío is a small town with a big church, and will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Its sand- and wooden post-filled streets feel straight out of the Wild West, a feeling only magnified by all the riders and carriages moving through the town. The lagoon next to it provides a haven for birdlife and bird watchers, and trips into Doñana can easily be organised. Visit the oversized cathedral, get some sand in your shoes, then have a relaxing drink by the water.

4. Roadtrip around the Pueblos Blancos

There are many white towns dotted around this area, but I highly recommend visiting Zahara de la Sierra for its stunning views across the lake and hills around it, and Setinel to see the famous rock overhangs under which many of the buildings of this town are wedged. It’s unusual to say the least, but beautiful. The labyrinth of narrow streets will have you wandering for hours. Finish your day at Ronda to see the impossibly tall bridge connecting the two sections of the town before heading back to Seville. Definitely one of the more memorable day trips from Seville.

5. Caminito Del Rey

If you want to get a little more active, this 10km walk will do perfectly. It starts with a meander through beautiful Andalucían forest before you enter the gorge and step food onto the narrow (but sturdy) walkway that clings to the cliff face. What used to be one of the world’s most dangerous walkways is now a major tourist attraction, and with all the twists and turns of the gorge offering continuously changing vistas, it’s not hard to see why. Two hours by train from Seville, it’s easy to get to, but will make for a long day.
